“The most basic and powerful way to connect to another is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention.”
— Rachel Naomi Remen
In an adult therapy session the client needs:
- to feel secure in a trusting relationship
- to feel accepted unconditionally, without judgment
- to be heard, to be seen for the person he or she is to feel valued and understood
- to feel confident in a therapist’s ability gained through experience, education and training
- to trust that the confidentiality of what is shared will not be violated
My responsibility as a therapist is:
- to attune to and honor a client’s needs
- to create an emotionally safe environment
- to listen with wholehearted interest and care
- to move at a client’s pace
- to support a client in being fully who he or she is to mirror and reflect back an honest picture of a client
- to accompany a client in a process of resolving daily life, inner conflicts and discovering what is meaningful in his or her life.
